A new optical method for detecting laser-generated acoustic pulse in solution

The optically excited surface plasmon has been successfully used for detecting laser-generated acoustic pulse in solution. Both experimental and theoretical results show that the sensitivity of this optical transducer strongly depends on the incident angle of the probe beam, the thickness and the complex dielectric constant of the metallic film. For gold films, the maximum sensitivity could be achieved with an optimum thickness of 46 nm at an angle of incidence of 55.6°. The sensitivity can be improved by a factor of 7 by replacing the gold film with a silver film of a thickness of 54 nm.
